Muddler Minnow (Green-Variant)
The Muddler Minnow is one of the best Cutthroat and Coho Patterns EVER made. In this weeks “Friday’s Fly” I will be tying a Variant that I have found to be GREAT for Winter time Cutthroat Trout. The tying steps are no different than the regular Muddler, the only difference is this one uses different colored Mallard flank.
The Recipe is;
-Hook, Size 8 (Straight eye if you have one.)
-Thread, 6/0 Olive
-Head, 1/8″ Gold or Copper Bead
-Tail, Dyed Mallard Flank
-Body, 3/64″ Uni Mylar (Gold Silver)
-Underwing, Dyed Olive Mallard Flank
-Overwing, Deer Hair
Tie in a small piece of the Olive Green Mallard flank. Then, tie in the uni-Mylarwith the Gold side UP!
Tie in a small piece of the Mallard Flank for the wing. It should be close to the lenght of the tail.
Cut out a clump of deer hair, stack it, and tie it in just behind the bead allowing the small tag pieces to flare out.
Trin the Flared out pieces to form a small head. Also, cut out some of the Deer hair wing to make it a bit on the sparse side.
Add a few drops of head cement and you are done.
The only part of this pattern than can be a bit tough is the tying in of the Deer Hair and the trimmng to form the head, but even these are not that hard.
Take your time with the first few, and in no time you will be tying these up in your sleep.
Fun Tying;
